12:45PM - 1:30PM Luncheon presentation
As the nation's unique philanthropic watchdog, NCRP has been involved this past year in both helping bring to the public's attention some of the unfortunate misbehaviors of a small proportion of the nation's charitable foundations and constructing potential solutions, including a mix of self-policing, stronger statutory and regulatory standards, and bolstered government oversight and enforcement capacities, to get rid of the bad apples undermining the reputation and reliability of the accountability of foundations. Rick Cohen will address what has led institutional philanthropy down a path of turning a blind eye to philanthropic malefactors, the implications for charitable giving and nonprofit governance as a result of the high profile coverage in the national press of philanthropic ccountability lapses, and NCRP's proposed agenda for resetting the pins of foundation probity. Because NCRP has been involved in negotiations and testimony with the Senate Finance Committee in its review of nonprofit and philanthropic accountability, Cohen will also address the likely course of legislation and regulation emerging from the concerns of Senators Grassley and Baucus--and what the nonprofit sector should be prepared to address in order to make the right calls in reinstilling core concepts of ethics, accountability, disclosure, and transparency in philanthropy. Luncheon Speaker: Rick Cohen, Executive Director, National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy |

What Nonprofits Can Learn About Online Marketing From Political Campaigns
Nonprofits can learn a lot about online marketing from the 2004 presidential campaigns. One of the best models has been "Dean for America", which proved that the Internet is a powerful tool for constituent engagement and fundraising. In only nine months, the Dean campaign increased its email list to 640,000 and raised $18 million-plus online. The secret? Applying established marketing techniques to the Internet while also pioneering new strategies uniquely suited for the online medium. Today’s progressive nonprofits recognize that some of the same approaches and tactics can also work for their organizations.
This moderated panel discussion, with Q&A, will explain how "Dean for America" quickly built a huge email file, used online communications to create an engaged constituency and set online fundraising records. Learn how the "Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence United with the Million Mom March" has been using similar techniques to achieve similar strong results. Find out how, in the first 150 days of launching an online campaign, the group grew its email file to 163,000, achieved response rates of 2.6-3.0 percent on email-based acquisition appeals, generated 4,000 online donations and utilized email to influence key Congressional votes.
Speakers: Heather Schatz, Director of Internet Advocacy,Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence United with the Million Mom March Bobby Clark, Dean for America Moderator: Gene Austin, CEO, Convio, Inc. back to agenda page
